Important Factors Affecting Our Environment
(and what you can do to help)
Fast Fashion - the fashion industry produces 10% of the yearly global carbon emissions and is the second largest consumer of water after agriculture (IPCC); it is also the host of an immense amount of clothing waste which often turns into micro plastics and ends up in the oceans and landfills (many times along with the chemical, harmful dye used to produce the clothes)
Deforestation - whether it be to acquire palm oil, timber, or to provide more space for agriculture, deforestation is reducing biodiversity through its destruction of ecosystems and worsening our air quality by cutting down our trees
Greenhouse Gas Emissions - according to NASA, “the greenhouse gas effect is...when gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap the sun’s heat;” since the Industrial Revolution began, humans’ excessive use of carbon dioxide and other gases has greatly increased the percentage of these gases in our atmosphere and has led to melting ice caps (which in turn leaves many vulnerable species on the verge of extinction and causes the ice caps to release the harmful methane stored inside them) as well as rising sea levels
Pesticide Use - pesticide use along with other chemical agricultural services are responsible for 30% of the global emissions leading to climate change (IPCC) and not only contaminate the soil, but also threaten the life within the soil
The Commercial Meat Industry - the conventional meat industry significantly increases greenhouse gas emissions (such as methane coming from cows), uses huge amounts of water and crops, and largely contributes to the high levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in the soil in addition to the loss of biodiversity, all while often treating their animals in terrible, inhumane manners
Pollution in General -whether it be plastic pollution, oil spills, car emissions, factory emissions, chemical fertilizers, or other forms of pollution that end up in our bodies of water, air, and even our food (soil), pollution is a core issue at the center of the fight to save our environment
